This recent change is resulting in a more diverse work environment with the potential for new opportunities and challenges to arise. Employees born in the 1970s -- the grouchy pragmatists of Generation X -- got invited to the party after everyone left, then were asked to clean up. The least sentimental, they are also the most resourceful. They bring a healthy dose of skepticism and a results-focused appreciation of what works. Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z – ranging from a generation born in the fallout of the Great Depression to a generation who has never known life without iPhones and social media, there are few commonalities between these five generations. The Five Generations in the Workplace It’s the first time in history that our workforce includes workers from five different generations. While this can be celebrated for its welcome diversity, this can also pose challenges for both engaging employees as well as collaborating with other colleagues. Here is a quick overview of the five generations by birth years: iGen, aka Generation Z: born 1996 and after. Millennials , aka Generation Y: born 1977 to 1995. Generation X: born 1965 to 1976. Baby Boomers: born 1946 to 1964. Traditionalists: born 1945 and before. Generation Z can easily adapt to different technologies and pick up new software.
